throws at Leamington C&AC
Shot Put, Discus, Hammer & Javelin
Leamington Cycling & Athletics Club has one of the strongest throws programmes in Warwickshire, coached by a team that includes a Commonwealth Games coach, a British record holder and over 50 years of combined throws experience.
Our throws group covers all four rotational and non-rotational disciplines — shot put, discus, hammer and javelin — welcoming athletes from complete beginners through to those competing at county and national level.
Training takes place at Edmondscote Athletics Track, which has a fully equipped throws facility including a cage built to current UKA specification.

Experience at Every Level
The Leamington C&AC throws group has one of the most experienced coaching teams in Warwickshire — combining elite para-athletic competition, decades of technical expertise and a passion for developing athletes of all abilities.

David Ashbourne
A UKA qualified Event Group Throws coach, David has developed the group from the ground up — building facilities, recruiting athletes and assembling a coaching team that now includes expertise at Commonwealth Games and British record holder level. Three of his athletes have been selected to represent Warwickshire at the English Schools Track & Field Championships in Birmingham.
Joshua Bain
Joshua coaches rotational throws and leads the club’s throws strength and conditioning programme — fulfilling a lifelong ambition to pass on 18 years of elite throwing experience to the next generation of athletes.
“It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to become a coach, and it would not have been possible without the support from Leamington.”

Joe Walker
Joseph brings unrivalled technical depth to the Leamington C&AC throws group, particularly in javelin, and his knowledge of athlete development at elite level is an exceptional asset for any thrower serious about their event.
the throws group
What to expect from throws training
All four disciplines. Our throws group covers shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. Athletes are introduced to all four events before focusing on their preferred discipline, developing both technical skill and physical conditioning under expert guidance.
Elite Coaching Training with a current British record holder gives Leamington C&AC throws athletes a genuine competitive advantage. Joshua’s 18 years of throwing experience informs every session — from basic technique to advanced rotational mechanics.
All Abilities Welcome Whether you’ve never picked up a shot put or you’re looking to develop serious competitive technique, there’s a place for you in the throws group. Our coaching is tailored to each athlete’s level and ambition.
Strength & Conditioning Throws training at Leamington C&AC includes a dedicated strength and conditioning element alongside technical work. Physical development is as important as technique in rotational throws and our programme reflects that.
para-athletics
Throws for Para-athletes
Leamington Cycling & Athletics Club is proud to be at the forefront of para-athletics provision in the Midlands. Our throws coaching team has direct experience of competing at Paralympic classification level, making us uniquely placed to support para-athletes in the throws disciplines.
In 2024, Leamington C&AC successfully proposed for the Midland Counties Athletics Association to introduce scored disability athletics events into the Midlands Senior League — a first for the region. Para-athletes are welcome in our throws group and will receive coaching appropriate to their classification and needs.
